The Basque Country is a region full of traditions, and its festivals are a sample of its rich culture and folklore. From religious festivities to popular celebrations, Basque festivals are a reflection of its unique identity.
One of the most famous festivals is the Semana Grande de San Sebastian, held in August. During this week, the city is filled with music, dances and events, culminating with the spectacular fireworks over the bay of La Concha.
The Day of the White Virgin in Vitoria-Gasteiz is another outstanding festival, when thousands of people dress in traditional red and white attire and participate in processions, music and dances. The celebrations include the famous “Celedón”, a doll that descends from the church of San Miguel to kick off the festivities.
In Bilbao, the Aste Nagusia festival is the biggest and most colorful, celebrated in August. During this week, the people of Bilbao enjoy concerts, traditional sports competitions, the fireworks competition and the march of the txistularis (musicians with flutes).
The Rioja Alavesa Grape Harvest Festival and the Tolosa Carnival are also popular events that attract thousands of visitors each year. Basque festivities are a reflection of joy, music, dance and, of course, wine.
